Medical Respite Coordinator – LPFN Jordan’s Principle

About Jordan’s Principle
Jordan’s Principle is a child-first initiative ensuring that First Nations children have equitable access to all government-funded public services. It was created in memory of Jordan River Anderson from Norway House Cree Nation and is rooted in the principle that no child should experience delays or denials in accessing essential services because of jurisdictional disputes. This program supports the health, well-being, and dignity of First Nations children and families by removing barriers to care.
About the Role
The Medical Respite Coordinator is responsible for planning, organizing, and overseeing medical respite services for families under Jordan’s Principle. This role ensures that children with complex medical needs and their caregivers receive timely, culturally respectful, and appropriate respite support. The Coordinator will work closely with Case Managers, health professionals, and families to arrange short-term care that meets medical requirements and provides relief for caregivers.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate and schedule medical respite care for eligible families, ensuring services meet medical and safety standards.
- Collaborate with Case Managers to assess medical needs and develop individualized respite plans.
- Liaise with respite providers, nurses, and other health professionals to ensure proper care delivery.
- Monitor and evaluate respite services for quality, safety, and cultural appropriateness.
- Maintain accurate documentation, care plans, and reporting as required by Jordan’s Principle.
- Ensure services are delivered promptly and without barriers, in alignment with Jordan’s Principle mandate.
- Provide guidance and support to families regarding medical respite options and processes.
- Uphold confidentiality and demonstrate cultural sensitivity at all times.
Qualifications
- Post-secondary education in Nursing, Health Care, Social Services, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- Experience in care coordination, medical respite planning, or health service delivery.
- Strong understanding of medical terminology and care requirements for children with complex needs.
- Excellent organizational and communication skills.
- Knowledge of Long Plain First Nation community and surrounding areas.
- Ability to work collaboratively with families, health professionals, and multidisciplinary teams.
- Current Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check including Child Abuse Registry Search.
- Valid Driver’s License and reliable transportation.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate cultural competency.
Assets
- Experience working with Indigenous communities.
- Familiarity with Jordan’s Principle and its commitment to equitable access for First Nations children and families.
- First Aid/CPR certification and knowledge of emergency protocols.
