About Jordan’s Principle

Jordan’s Principle is a child-first initiative ensuring that First Nations children have equitable access to all government-funded public services. It was created in memory of Jordan River Anderson from Norway House Cree Nation and is rooted in the principle that no child should experience delays or denials in accessing essential services because of jurisdictional disputes. This program supports the health, well-being, and dignity of First Nations children and families by removing barriers to care.

About the Role

Under the supervision of the Jordan’s Principle Program Manager, the Family Advocate is responsible for providing support and services to Indigenous children with complex needs and their caregivers. The Family Advocate will strive to create a fun and enjoyable atmosphere to encourage client participation in all programming and community initiatives. The Family Advocate will also be expected to work collaboratively with other community stakeholders to provide support, address gaps in service, avoid jurisdictional disputes, and improve the overall health and wellbeing of Indigenous children.

Key Responsibilities

Supportive & Specialized Care

  • Provide holistic, culturally grounded advocacy and support to Indigenous children with complex needs and their caregivers, delivered in homes and community settings.
  • Follow individualized care plans and program policies while promoting client safety, independence, dignity, and informed decision‑making.
  • Conduct in‑home assessments focusing on parent‑child attachment, family strengths and needs, challenges, and connections to community resources.
  • Develop and facilitate activities that reflect Indigenous traditions, culture, and the interests of each child, supporting their overall potential and well‑being.
  • Plan, implement, and evaluate recreational, social, educational, and health‑focused programming for children and families.
  • Deliver formal presentations, informal teachings, and anticipatory guidance on health, illness, injury prevention, and healthy lifestyle practices.
  • Provide client‑specific training within scope of practice.
  • Maintain professional boundaries and refrain from imposing personal beliefs or values.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Administrative Responsibilities

  • Document all activities, assessments, and observations in client health records; report changes, concerns, incidents, and non‑compliance to the Supervisor.
  • Complete required forms, timesheets, mileage reports, and other documentation according to program policies.
  • Identify gaps in service systems and advocate for early intervention, coordinated services, and appropriate staff training.
  • Participate in team collaboration, meetings, conferences, and quality assurance initiatives.
  • Support client safety by addressing issues promptly and reporting health or safety risks in homes.
  • Maintain organized records and assist in developing improved data‑management strategies.
  • Carry out additional administrative duties as assigned.

General Organizational Responsibilities

  • Participate in regular supervision, including annual performance reviews.
  • Attend mandatory employee and departmental meetings.
  • Engage in professional development and training relevant to the role.
  • Represent the organization professionally, upholding its mission, vision, values, and positive workplace relationships.
  • Contribute to a supportive, respectful organizational environment.

Qualifications

  • Valid Class 4 Driver’s License Would be an asset
  • Current Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check.
  • Clear Child Abuse Registry Check
  • First Aid/CPR certification (or willingness to obtain).
  • Post-secondary education in social services degree, education degree, or nursing degree or related Experience
  • Knowledge of Long Plain First Nation community and surrounding areas.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse populations.
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to work flexible hours (including evenings/weekends if needed).
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate cultural competency.
