Today was Treaty Day at Long Plain First Nation.
Councillor Liz Merrick says the day started off with an opening prayer.
“Today is a special day. It used to be about just handing out money,” says Merrick, referring to the five dollars given out by Indigenous Services Canada and the twenty dollars from their land annuity, “but now we’re feeding our people, they come in for the food. We also have some activities for our kids and grandkids.”
Merrick notes it’s nice that people come out and stay for the day. She says it’s an enjoyable community event opposed to people just coming to collect their money and then leaving.
