On behalf of the Long Plain people we offer our condolences to our relations, the Smoke family, to his life partner Rosalind Merrick and to the Dakota Plains Oyate on the passing of Chief Orville Smoke.
Chief Orville Smoke served his people faithfully and diligently for well over 27 years and will be remembered for his strong leadership of the Dakota Plains Oyate. We are confident his fight to protect the sovereignty of Dakota Plains throughout his leadership will continue with his successor, his son Chief Don Smoke. We at Long Plain will forever stand side by side with Dakota Plains and will continue our sacred relationship with our Dakota Plains family in the years to come. We ask for the Creator’s blessings to all who are in mourning on the passing of a humble, gentle and great leader of the Oyate.
