Chief and Council have been informed that certain persons claim that they have the right to call a vote to seek to reopen the polls in respect of the April 16, 2022 election for Chief and Council, and that they have called for such a vote to take place.

Those purporting to call for such a vote, have not sought to ask the Court whether the Long Plain First Nation Custom Election Act permits them to do so.

The Chief and Council have consulted a law firm, and Chief and Council have been advised that no such authority exists. Holding such a vote is plainly not part of the election process of the Long Plain First Nation and is contrary to the terms of the Custom Election Act.

That said, any tribal member is encouraged to bring any concerns over the election process and band governance directly to the Chief and Council at any time. Chief and Council maintain an “open door” policy.
