Customers young and old turned out in droves to get a taste of the region’s first legal cannabis dispensary.
High Tide, Ultra Sour, Super Skunk and Ghost Train Haze are just a couple varieties of the herb available at the retail store, located at 79 Keesekeemaquah Drive at the west end of Crescent Road on Long Plain First Nation’s urban reserve land, which opened its doors to an enthusiastic crowd Friday afternoon.
“We were hoping to be here on day one (of legalization), but I’m glad today we’re able to do it,” says Long Plain Chief Dennis Meeches. “I didn’t think we would be first (in the Central Plains region) but I knew we would be in the mix of things. Central Plains is a fairly large region and it does need to be serviced with a cannabis supply company and I’m glad we’re the one.”
Meta Cannabis Supply Co. will be outfitted with 14 employees and will open seven days a week while in operation from 10 a.m. – 10 p.m., except Sundays, where hours will be from 10-6 p.m.
“We have a strong economic vision and we want to continue on our strategy with job growth, creating new companies and new businesses, that’s our game plan,” adds Meeches.
The Long Plain Chief added that a location will be opening in the coming weeks at 420 Madison St., in Winnipeg and that it’s possible that an additional location could open in Long Plain.
Meeches added that council is also strongly considering getting involved in cannabis cultivation.
